How to Create a Room With Meaning

Do you have rooms that need a little love? Part of the joy of furnishing a room is adding a personal touch. Since we all have different tastes, you can’t take a cookie cutter approach to home decorating. Here are three helpful steps.

STEP 1

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is important to me?
  • How and where do I spend my time?
  • What are my hobbies?
  • Who am I with most?
  • What do I collect?
  • What are my favorite places, music, books, movies and food?

STEP 2

Apply what you’ve learned.

For example, if you have “beach” listed as one of your favorite places, check around your home for keepsakes like shells that you may have picked up or photos you took. These will serve as your inspiration and can be incorporated into the decor.

    • Souvenirs: Display on shelves, mantels or in glass accent boxes.
    • Photos: Frame a variety of images and sizes and create a personal photo gallery.

Other inspirational ideas include:

  • Antiques: Displaying tokens of the past connect you with the stories of your ancestors and are excellent conversation starters.
  • Art: Find and display paintings, sculptures, canvas art, tapestries, photos, even clocks–anything that resonates with you. If it was made by you or a loved one, even better!
  • Models: Show your love for a hobby or sport by staging boats, cars, airplanes stadiums and more.
  • Walls: Give the room a fresh coat of paint or wallpaper incorporating colors that reflect your personality and style.

STEP 3

Decide where they go.

Now that you’ve gathered your items, decide where to place them. Consider each room and find the areas where you can add a personal touch.

Dining Room

This room’s possibilities feed off the types of furniture and wall space you have. Stage decorative items on open shelves or in china cabinets. Hang art, like this time piece collection on the wall above a buffet or server.

Living Room

Here’s your chance to show off your personal treasures. Add built-in shelves, curios or bookcases to accommodate these items. A shelf behind the sofa is perfect for displaying a hand-built model.

Add a console table along a wall or behind a sofa to hold conversation pieces, like a stylish lamp, favorite books, pictures and more. Hang wall art throughout the room.

Adorn an end table with picture frames or an electronic photo frame loaded with your favorite photos.

Family Room

In this gathering spot where memories are made, the focus is on recreation and entertainment. A huge wall unit, entertainment center or book shelf provides an empty canvas where favorite objects can be displayed.

Home Office

An office does not need to look boring. Here’s an example Inspired by the timeless appeal of American classic furnishings. The Townser home office desk revisits tradition in style. Credenzas and desk hutches also provide ample space for displays.

Bedroom

Dressers offer a valuable top shelf for displaying personal treasures. Add as many as you need to create personalized space. Add wall art with special wording above the headboard and it will all come together.

Kids Rooms

Up to a challenge? Get bedroom furniture with storage and display space show off their treasures. Use wall art or some of their own art to add character to the room.

Rooms filled with your personality are naturally more meaningful and appealing. If you have ideas for adding meaning, we’d love to hear them in the comments section.

HOTEL TAKEAWAYS: IDEAS FOR DISPLAYING SHAMPOOS, LOTIONS & SOAPS

We love anything miniature: Dachshunds, portraits, ponies, dollhouses, veggies, you name it. Hotel amenities like shampoo, conditioner and body lotion fall in the same obsession. No two hotel brands offer the same design, which makes each object a tiny piece of packaging art. Rather than storing in a dark cabinet, there are ways to put these takeaways in the spotlight.

IN THE GUEST ROOM

Even if they packed enough shampoo to outlast the visit, your guests will enjoy being greeted by a basket or tray filled with pampering treats. Body oil, shampoo, conditioner and lotion are also tucked within. Sprigs of fresh rosemary compensate for the unscented plaster of Paris rose!

MASTER BATH: THE COUNTERTOP VERSION

Apothecary jars have a way of making the contents look more elegant than they really are. This statuesque jar contains enough product to last for weeks.

MASTER BATH: THE SPA TUB VERSION

Hotels tend to provide more soap than guests could possibly need and replenish whatever was used (or stashed in the suitcase) on a daily basis. Placed on the tub ledge, this glass canister keeps dozens of creamy hued bars within reach.

Now anytime you’re privy to cute takeaways, don’t assume they’ll have to be stuffed in a closet or under a counter. Put them on display in your home in a beautiful and functional way.

NEED SPACE FOR STUDY TIME: SET UP A HOMEWORK STATION

Now that the kids are back in school, are you struggling at homework time? Perhaps you need a game plan for after school studying. Here are some tips on how to get started on setting up a homework station.

PICK THE RIGHT SPOT

Choose a location in the home for work and study. It needs be a quiet escape. Ideally, it could be a study, basement office, attic office or even a secluded kitchen nook. Ask your kids for their ideas and incorporate as many of them as possible. This will help get their buy-in so they’ll use it more. Include favorite colors and posters, as well as educational items like maps, globes, books, art supplies, computers, printers, chalkboards/dry erase boards and calendars.

GET IT TOGETHER FOR COMFORT

Clean up the clutter. Remove toys and items they’ve outgrown. Paint the study area their favorite color. Up the comfort by putting down an area rug. A blanket rack for displaying cozy throws is another great idea, so they can keep warm during long winter nights. Providing adequate lighting is important, too. Use floor lamps, pendant lights and desk lamps to brighten things up. These help prevent eyestrain and headaches.

Throw Pillow (2)

FURNISH IT

Set the scene with a desk or table. The bigger the better―kids need lots of room to work. Add bookshelves, file cabinets and storage bins for keeping supplies organized and within reach. Decorate the walls. Include a wall clock, decorative canvas prints and a corkboard for pinning A+ work, photos and more. You can accent the work surface with a small plant, photo frame and a favorite souvenir. Finish it off with a comfortable chair with ergonomic features.

Kids Storage (2)

WHAT’S NEXT?

Once the homework station is ready, turn your focus to an area where you can keep organized and up-to-date on their progress. That will be the next project!
